Stave 2
A character who changes through the course of a novel is called "dynamic." Scrooge is one such character. Examine the young Scrooge we meet in Stave 2 and describe how his personality is different from that of the Scrooge from Stave 1. Why do you think he changed so much between his youth and old age? Give textual evidence to support your answer, including page numbers.

  1. I think the reason why Scrooge changed over the years is because of hos past when he was a child. And the reason why he hates Christmas is because of his partners death on Christmas Eve. Scrooge begs the Spirit on pg. 38 "Spirit!" said Scrooge in a broken voice," remove me from this place." He said this because the Spirit was showing him Marley's death. And someone tells Scrooge "His partner lies upon the point of death, I hear; and there he sat alone. Quite alone in the world,I do believe."

  2. T.Tucker My comment: Scrooge's personality changes because one of his only friends Marley died on Christmas Eve.An example on page 38 is,"Spirit!" said Scrooge in a broken voice,"remove me from this place." He was talking about his friend Marley. Now he does not enjoy Christmas because of this death he suffered.
    My comment to another post:
I agree with C.Douglas. Scrooge is just upset because of the death of his friend Marley.

  3. C.Maulden I think Scrooge changes when his "girl friend" gives the ring back because when he sees it happen again he wishes to have changed it.On page 36 "Spirit!"said Scrooge,"show me no more!Conduct me home. Why do you delight to torture me?" it shows a sense of regret and sorrow.I have a personal connection with this because in third grade I had gotten my first girl friend and we dated for the yaer then she dumped me it changed me to were I didnt want to go to school then i got hope when I realized i could change the mistakes in the present to help me feel better with more joy

  4. Scrooge does change in his childhood to the begining of hi manhood. An example is when he is a young boy on christmas day and has no plans but, is surprised by his sister,Fan.
-"I have come to bring you home, dear brother." said the child, clapping her tiny hands, and bending down to laugh.-Pg28

    PEER RESPONSE:
I agree with C. Douglas that scrooge was horrified, disturbed. and requested to see no more.

  5. Scrooge change a alot during his childhood. Especially when his friend Marley died in christmas, since then scrooge dosent like christmas at all. On (pg.26) the ghost says,"what was merry christmas to scrooge? What good has it ever done him?". Their trying to say that christmas has never being anything good for scrooge is just something that really hurt him.

On (pg.38) scrooge says, "spirit!" said scrooge in a broken voice, "remove me from this place."
The ghost were showing him Marley's dead and he felt really bad.

  7. scrooge was a nice kid but know he has turned mean i think it might be marleys death but now i think it is his childhood, but i have evedence that he was left alone and that might have been the case on page (26)"the school is not quite deserted "says the spirit "a solitary child child , neglected by his freinds is left there still."then it says how ;scrooge was sobing; a.duvall

  8. Alot of things happened between the younge and old scrooge.Like the fact that Marley hispartner for buisness and the only peson he was close to died on Christmas 7 seven years ago in "A Christmas Carol. page 38 states"Spirit" said Scrooge in a broken voice" Remove me from this place" Which is why I agree with what a.duvall said about scrooge's personality changing from a nice little kid that was left alone in boarding school to a mean older guy who lost his closest friend on Christmas.

  9. I think that the only reason that Scrooge is so mean in Stave 2 is because that the fact that his only friend died on Christmas Eve.(pg.38)"Spirit" said Scrooge in a broken voice,"Remove me from this place". I agree with you M.Southwood good job.

  10. I agree with C.Douglas an K.Romero. For the fact that Scrooge's former business partner,Marley, died 7 years ago on Christmas Eve, it lead to a hole that he he just couldn't get out of; or, didn't want to get out of. I think that the reason being of his grouchy self, he is very confused and feels like he needs to make a change as it states on page 38, " Spirit, " said Scrooge in a broken voice, " Remove me from this place. " Also, since his fiance broke it off with him when he was younger and didn't want to chase after her, I think that also affected his future. The difference between his old self and young self is that he had a bad past and didn't want it to happen to him again.

  11. I agree with K.Romero because Scrooge did get rejected by his faincee during sometime around Christmas. He regrets that day because he did love her, and I add this on to my first comment I did not have a peer response so here is my peer response.

  12. I agree with T.Tucker,
because Scrooge undergos the horrible expereince of his friend Marley dieing on Christmas Eve.Also another reason for Scrooge acting the way he does when he is older, is because Scrooge got rejected by his fiancee even though Scrooge loved her,and he didnt fight for her which made him regret his decision of letting her go.On (pg.38) He says,"Leave me! Take me back!Haunt me no longer!" That clearly represents how Scrooge does not like the memories that he is seeing as a child, and had an affect of his actions when he got older.

  13. i agree with t.tucker also because marley died on christmas eve and scrooge never got to see his family on christmas either and that must have scrooge realy mad causing him to hate christmas.it even sais on page 38 "leave me!take me back!haunt me no longer!"that obviously shows that scrooge realy dosnt like his old child hood memories.T.Bennett

  14. I would say that when Scrooge was young he had some really tough moments in his life.An example is Scrooge had problems in his relationship when he was young, his girfriend practically rejected his proposal by giving him back the ring he gave her and that was something that really touched his heart. Also Scrooge lost one of his only friend and partner 7 years ago, Marley, on Christmas day and those are things that are always going to be in his heart and mind. Those are very harsh memories that i think caused Scrooge to have changed now that he is older. Scrooge is now an older man and one of the spirit that visits him makes him remember all those memories and Scrooge is hurt by them and it shows it in the book on page 38 where Scrooge yells at the spirit and says "remove me from this place."
"Remove me!" Scrooge exclaimed "I cannot bear it!"
Leave me! Take me back! Haunt me no longer!"
All these things that Scrooge says to the spirit give his emotion away and prove that Scrooge wishes his past had been different and maybe he wouldnt have such a negative attitude like he has as an older man.

    PEER RESPONSE:
I agree with B. Le, Scrooge's past affected his future and he doesn't want to go back to it Scrooge shows regret in his past and the spirits only reminding him of it makes him sad. Scrooge only wishes his past had been different maybe that would also have a connection with the way he is now.

  16. I agree with Tori Tucker ,because what she mentioned was true.Scrooge's past affected him when his friend Marley died on Christmas eve and thats the reason he doesnt like Christmas nomore. While everybody else is enojoying Christmas Scrooge is very depress as it says on page 33 "That scrooge had acted like a man out of his wits."On page 38 it also mentions that he doesn't like christmas because of what he says, "Spirit said scrooge in a broken voice,"remove me from this place."

  17. on stave 2, scrooge changes drastically, since he always was a mean old man with a terrible temper and hated Christmas for reasons only his sad past can explain. On Christmas day, his only friend and work partner died. Broken-hearted, he took refuge on anger and bitterness twoards others, and especially on the holiday Marley died on, Chrismas day. Then, when the spirits show him the past, present, and future, he realizes he wants to change for the better, those new feelings sprouting from guiltiness deep inside of him. You can tell he felt bad for all of the things he did when he said "Spirit!remove me from this place" and "I cannot bare it!Leave me!Take me back!haunt me no longer!".He knew he had done bad things before and now realizing the damage done, couldn't watch himself anymore.G.Carreon:)

  19. i think scrooge has changed alot threw out stave 2 because he has started to regret being so rude to every one.on pg.31 he saw fezziwig and was thinking that he should be a better boss like fezziwig.

  20. Scrooge changed alot thru out stave 2. Because he stared thinking about all the bad things he did all his life, Pg. 33 "A small mattter." said the ghost."To make these silly folks full of gratitude."

  21. I agree with C.DOUGLAS.I think throught this stave that Scrooge was the most dynamic character to me because he went from being such a rude disrespectful "hag" to a person who in a way started to see things differently. He didnt just think that everything was wrong and that everyone should just leave him alone he started to understand why he thought all of that when the spirit of christmas past came. He was tookin back to the time his friend Marley died.on page 38 he said and I quote "spirit!" "remove me from this place". In that short phraze you can tell that Scrooge does not want to remember what had happened to his friend he could not bear to relive the experience.

  22. Scrooge wasn't always groughy man like right here in (PG33) "the two apprentices who were pouring out their hearts in praise of fezziwig." He started takeing money over people includeing his girlfriend.T.shedd

  23. In stave 2 I think Scrooge is frightened at first by seeing the ghost of christmas past. But later on in the text he starts to get emotional. Possibly the reason for that is because he didn't have a really good past and didn't want to go back to it and have to remember it. Here is a quote proving "So she had, cried Scrooge." A.Romero

  24. I agree with M.Cabra because Scrooge had proven his fiance wrong when he didn't try to stop her from leaving. On pg34"An other idol has displaced me."That shows that he used to care about people and now he cares all about money.

Scrooge used to not be so mean and hate Christmas it was just that his partners death was on Christmas eve and my have effected him but he didnt show it."And even Scrooge was not so dreadfully cut up by this sad event,..." Also growing up he had a hard life. When Christmas came around every one had left from the school he attended except him. The only one who came was his sister. My point is just by all the bad things that has happened to him he became a grumpy man.
    Peer Response:
I agree with C.Douglas because she also talks about the tolls on his life.

  26. MY RESPONSE TO SOMEONE'S COMMENT: I agree with D.Salinaz. The only reason scrooge is so grumy and bitter twoards others is because of all the bad things that happend in his childhood and what made it worse was the recent tragedy, the death of his partner, Marley.G.Carreon:)
